It's Never Too Late: Transforming Passions into Professions
Have you ever felt like it’s too late to pursue your dreams? Do you wonder if your past experiences could ever align with your calling? If so, you’re not alone! In our latest GraceFilled Community Podcast episode, we sat down with Denise Payne, a passionate career counselor, to discuss how faith and divine guidance can lead to fulfilling careers—at any stage of life. 🎙️
Denise’s journey is a testament to the fact that God’s timing is always perfect. She founded Career Crossroads Counseling at the age of 50, after two decades of homeschooling her children. Rather than seeing her transition as a late start, she embraced it as a divine appointment, proving that God can use every season of our lives for His purpose.
Breaking Through Self-Doubt and Fear
One of the biggest obstacles many people face when pursuing a new path is self-doubt. The enemy often whispers, “You’re too old,” “You’ve missed your chance,” or “You’re not qualified.” But God’s Word tells a different story.
🔹 Moses was 80 years old when God called him to lead Israel (Exodus 7:7). 🔹 Abraham was 75 when God promised to make him a great nation (Genesis 12:4). 🔹 Paul had a radical career shift from persecutor of Christians to one of history’s greatest evangelists (Acts 9:1-22).
Denise encourages listeners to reject the lies of the enemy and instead lean into God’s promises. Faith, prayer, and community support can empower us to push past our fears and embrace the opportunities God places before us.
Embracing Your Season and Strengths
Denise’s story reminds us that our life experiences are not wasted. Every skill, lesson, and challenge you’ve faced can become a stepping stone for your next season. Proverbs 3:5-6 urges us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding. When we surrender our career paths to Him, He directs our steps toward fulfillment and impact.
She also shared practical strategies for discovering God-given strengths and interests:
✔️ Reflect on past roles and passions—What tasks bring you joy and fulfillment?
✔️ Seek counsel and mentorship—Wise advisors can help clarify your purpose (Proverbs 15:22).
✔️ Pray for divine direction—God is faithful to answer (Jeremiah 29:11).
The Power of Intercession in Career Transitions
Denise emphasizes the importance of prayer when facing career changes. Intercession invites God into the process, helping individuals navigate uncertainty with peace and clarity. She shared testimonies of how prayer has unlocked doors, provided confirmation, and instilled courage in those stepping into new opportunities.
James 1:5 reminds us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” God is not only concerned with our spiritual growth, but also with our career paths, dreams, and aspirations.
Your Past Is a Stepping Stone, Not a Roadblock
Every experience—good or bad—can be used for God’s glory.
Many people hesitate to embrace new career paths because they see past failures or detours as disqualifiers. However, Romans 8:28 assures us that God works all things together for good. Denise’s own journey exemplifies this truth. She leveraged her years of homeschooling to develop skills in mentoring, teaching, and guidance—skills that now serve her career counseling practice.
💡 What if the very thing you think disqualifies you is what God will use to propel you forward?
